I'm a beginner in Blender. But I've decided to take it upon myself to modify and animate Talim Ryona. SC4 is one of the better "clothing destruction" games IMO. Senran Kagura is funny but isn't as sexy IMO. Dead or Alive is sexy, but doesn't have as much clothing destruction.

Step one of modeling is to build the original model. Or in my case, find the original model somehow. There were XNALara models available everywhere, but XNALara is too primitive for the work I wanted to do. Furthermore, Talim's "clothing destruction" meshes were unavailable everywhere I looked. Instead, I found a rip of SCIV and rebuilt the model from the data. (Game hackers already converted it to MTL and .OBJ files).

While this was time consuming and took a lot of effort to learn how to do, I think the effort has been worthwhile. Blender's idea of transparency is just simply better. And animations seem to be far more possible in Blender. Finally, the bump-maps and normal-maps I'm using are cannonical to the original game... while I don't know how anyone actually made those XNALara mods.

Without further ado, here are three "states" of Talim. First, the fully clothed model. Second is the "torn" model for the three SCIV states: hat off, shirt off, and pants-torn. Finally, I created a mod for Talim's hair which I feel like it'd be useful. I basically took Hilde's hair (P1 model) after Hilde's helmet is knocked off, recolored it to Talim's hair color, and then merged the two meshes. I tweaked the vertices a bit and then used cloth physics to get Hilde's hair to fit on Talim's head a bit better.

I need to tweak it a bit more but I think it does a decent job at looking like Talim's hair is down.

My next step is that I have to somehow learn to rig, and then maybe I'll start to do some static-poses (likely based on the Senran Kagura: Estival Versus poses). After I get used to rigging / posing, I do plan to eventually make simple animations.

The "360_view.zip" file are .mp4 files that are simple animations to do a 360 loop around Talim. I did manage to play with a bit of the cloth physics of Blender, so if you notice... the ribbons, pants, and "foot rings" are actually animated according to Blender's internal physics engine.

So that sort of stuff should make animation easier for me (and is a big reason why I'm using Blender, and not XNALara).

I haven't fully figured out what my ultimate plan will be. But this is probably a good starting point for some kind of Ryona story. Text + Visuals should be helpful in theory. Talim is also one of the few characters who can dual-wields the legendary blades of the game (Soul Edge + Soul Calibur). So I feel like these two weapons can provide better potential as a starting point for a story.

After a week worth of work, I still don't have the model fully rigged. Mostly because I'm super-n00b at this and am running into issues constantly. With that being said, some "creative" camera angles can negate some of those issues...

The arm deformations seem a little wrong still, but the leg and foot deformations seem to be working out well. The ribbon physics took a long time to get correct, but its hella-easier to have Blender just calculate the positions of those ribbons, instead of manually placing them.

Also, the face isn't posable at all yet. I still got a bit of work to do before I can make an animation here.

Posing still takes a long time because I only have the deform bones (aka: like XNALara). I'm hoping that with IK bones and some other blender features, I'll be able to pose faster in the future.

Also, clothes are really hard to do. The pants took longer for me to vertex-paint than the underlying skin. And I still have to do the "torn" pants. Ah well, maybe I'll learn to get quicker soon.

This isn't all from the same render. I also wanted to try out the other hair.

And of course: a clothes test.

Glad to see someone working on this kind of art again. If only the Overwatch porn makers did some ryona.

In case anyone is wondering: this week was more learning. I learned how to build a ragdoll in Blender. Its not as good as "Grand Theft Auto 5", but its better than Valkyria Chronicles, lol.

test.png

With regards to Ryona, ragdolls are good for a "limp" and "unconscious" feeling. But pure ragdolls aren't sufficient for what I want to do. I'll have to integrate this into animation: sometimes stepping a Ragdoll, but Talim ideally wouldn't be 100% limp the whole time. Ideally, there'd be a wavering in-and-out of unconsciousness throughout a sequence (maybe half-a-second of limp, but then Talim tries to roll out of the way or something).

More research required.

Alternatively, I probably should be working on face poses, lol. Those are important.

Upon some more thought, I'm not sure how many people are even interested in the theory of 3d modeling out there... or shitty ragdolls lol. So I'll be quiet about it (unless someone out there is interested! I'm willing to talk, but its probably not why most people would visit this topic. Lol).

So with that being said, here's a face-pose I've been working on. I'm trying to get that pain-look down correctly.

EDIT: Hmm, it doesn't seem natural. Maybe in the right context? I changed the jaw / neck / head / clavicle really quickly and it really made a big difference.

EDIT: Last tweak, a bit of that "anime" left eye closed / right eye open for pain representation on this last one.

The shoulder looks a bit funny, but I'm overall happy with this shot.

Got a nice face-pose and everything together. I sorta felt like doing a "before" and "after" shot as well.

The "before" shot isn't as good though IMO.

So the past few weeks have been me learning how to use Cycles (aka: Blender's raytracer).
cycles1.png

It was a lot of effort, but I like cycles a lot more. Its easier to define "metallic" objects and far more accurate with shadows.

EDIT: Got a "torn pants" render, the transparency effects on the raytracer are so much better.

Okay, got a few renders on a "on back" pose to test out this new raytracer stuff. I'm still having issues with cloth physics, but I think its overall looking better anyway.

"Before": 1.png 2.png 3.png

"After": part2_1.png (Lol, big cloth physics fail, but "wardrobe malfunction" looks all good).

Bonus: part3_1.png

I decided for a "thrown against the wall" pose this time.

2_1080.png

I've got the weapons finally in Cycles. I think I'd have to work on Soul Edge for a month before it looks decent, but Soul Calibur looks quite nice with basic subsurface scattering (I imagined it to be like a weaponized gemstone).

I always like a "before and after shot". So earlier, Talim was thrown into the wall. Here is the "after" when she slides down and positions herself on the ground.

part2_1_1080.png

Talim's trying to hold herself up using her Elbow Blades, but doesn't quite have the strength to recover. Her face is serene, she's hovering somewhere between consciousness and unconsciousness.

In a moment of weakness, Talim lets go of Soul Calibur. The sacred blade was sustaining her, if ever so slightly. In contrast, her left hand still grips the vampiric evil blade Soul Edge, and Talim immediately falls unconscious to the evil blade's life drain.

As the blade feasts upon Talim's vitality, will Talim wake up before it is too late?

Is it just me, or is the SC4 costume cuter?

Anyway, just a straightforward XNALara import from Chrissy-Tee (SCVI Talim XPS Model). SC6 has SRMA (Specular, Roughness, Metalic, Ambient) textures. I kinda faked the metallic textures in SC4, but no need to do that anymore. The original artist's vision is more clear.

Just a quickie pose, using the bones that were already setup by Chrissy-Tee, + some stage from Dead or Alive 5. Found some stairs and dropped Talim on them.

Talim's gonna take a break and stretch it out a bit. Ragdolls take some energy!

S stashar - Is it wrong that I love Talim's new SC6 outfit just as much as her SC4 one? I guess for me it's got the best elements of her SC4 and SC2 1P outfits and a tiny bit of her SC3 1P outfit... About the only thing missing from it to be perfect for me is adding a little nod to her 2P SC4 outfit, but it's fine how it is. Also, just love the pictures you make of Talim; she's one of my favorite SC girls along with Xianghua, Amy and Seong Mi-na, but she doesn't get a lot of (ryona) focus. The small stairs set was nice to see.

Oh, its a good outfit overall. I think I can agree with you that it is a great combination of her past outfits. I generally consider SC2 Talim's outfit to be the canonical one, as it was the first. There are just a few elements of the SC4 outfit which set the cuteness to overdrive.

Anyway, thanks for the complements! I think I'm getting a bit better at this posing thing. The SC6 model is imported from XNALara, which means other people did a lot of the work of vertex-painting and bone modeling. I didn't realize that the XNALara community had so many stages available by the way, so I have just been stealing some stages from various sources online to place Talim into.
