I love to fantasize about the zako's personal background, seeing them as ambivalent characters. While voluntarily working for the evil side, they are also somebody's child, sibling, spouse, parent... living a quite normal life outside their job. Death may be the just deserts, but it's a tragedy nonetheless.

I love certain death scenes, and the possibility that a very nasty end may happen to any of the baddies, no matter how likeable they are as a person, adds suspense to the story. On the other side, it can bring relief to see them finally survive.

The right death-survival ratio depends on the overall tone of the movie.
