i love the idea that you are making a zako playthrough of saints row III, but it would be much better with as much "faction accuracy" as possible. here is my zako mod for saints row III. the main changes are as follows:
Morningstar are the most straightforward, swapping out the sniper lieutenants and male soldiers with the generic bitches. Deckers are swapped out with the female specialists. Luchadores are trickier due to being all-male, but i found a good alternative with the masked female gimp models. closest thing to female luchadores. Stag might not be as "noticeable", especially in the remastered version with the visors that annoyingly leave little visual looks at the face (the "only" feminine quality STAG girls have), but it will still swap out the males with the two generic female models, including the stag commandos. police and military have been annoyingly "masculine" and there isn't much of a good alternative, but there are two generic police and "camo police" (for soldiers) models in the game swapped out accordingly. only annoying thing is that the only usable model in this case is black, so it does leave you "open" to the slight possiblilty of a racism accusation, as you would be mowing down an "all-black" military and police force. plus, the models don't look as attractive for me as other generic females in the game. also in this mod, i absolutely hate zombies, so i had swapped them out with something more... preferable. either female cyber-deckers or Mascots, likely gat mascots and saints flow cans. not sure which. but if you don't like that, i uploaded a version that has the zombies restored to normal, but all female.

Link doesnt work, is it easy to Mod Saints Row 3?

A while ago, I was actually playing around with some Streets of Rage 2 hacking tools and dabbled a bit in creating sprites. I thought about the idea of creating a zako hack for the game with some custom-made sprites. Below I've attached the sprites that I've created so far. plus a screenshot of the hack working on the Kega emulator:

The enemy designs are actually a sort of homage to zakos of old. But as I've said before, this was a while back and the hack hasn't really progressed since. I can send the BIN file for the hack if people want it but it's really buggy.

Can you send me the sprites only? I like the girl on the top!

I had a very strong inkling that you might actually like her design . Unfortunately, the sheet above is actually the extent to which I've done sprites of her. However, I might develop more sprites in the future when I feel like wanting to continue with the hack.

OK. I think that should be enough.
I like her more since she looks like a brawler/martial artist kind of girl.

If you prefer I can make a sort of concept art based on her design. But only once I'm done with part two of my current project (which I really should stop procrastinating from).

New Zako are always appreciated. Those actually look pretty high effort, rather than a cut and paste. Honestly man, nice job!

Thank you, I appreciate that! They really are all made 100% from the ground up. I really don't like tracing or just copying stuff (referencing is fine). A matter of artistic ethics and all that jazz.

I have lots of ideas for things like projects, game concepts, etc. But, the time (and maybe talent) is not always readily available.

Deathloop have plenty of faceless zakos, they are called Eternalist. They are all wearing mask, but they dressed in 60's style outfit with minidress and boots. You can knock them to the ground by kicking or luring them into floor full of candy balls causing them to slip. When you kill them their body disappears.

Been giving blood and steel based on the forum's recommendation. sort of shame that few available female troop skins are almost 30 dollars and most are behind events, which I don't know if they will rerun... and by event it seems to be battle pass which is also paid content. Atleast I can get female archers for free.

Sound is decent, voice acting not so much.... if only game had blood and gore...

I don't think there's a person in the world who doesn't feel that, man. But brand new sprites that fit in with a game's aesthetic are a pretty good accomplishment, especially with animations, super especially if it's not a skill you make a living with or went to school for.

Watt Khan, your sprite work is outstanding. I do zako sprite edits myself, but nowhere near to your level. I hope you keep going!
Your zako artwork is also amazing. Your post on the dynamite lady from Sunset Riders inspired me to do a little tribute to her.
The game developers did a wonderful job on her design and animation (just look how her hair moves when she jumps, crouches, or falls).

The game also gives the player a wide range of options for dealing with her.
A merciful hero might let her live.
But the hero might also gun her down, flatten her with boulders, or burn her to a crisp.
I love when games give the player a range of options for dealing with zako, and I explore each of those options here.
I put the gifs here in a thumbnail preview format, but you can open each one to see the full animation.

First, here she is doing her trademark taunt:
Sunset Riders Zako Taunt.gif

And here is her most common defeat animation:
Sunset Riders Zako Down.gif

Her ploy is to throw a stick of dynamite at the hero, and this is how she probably hopes the encounter will go:
Sunset Riders Zako Victory2.gif

But the hero is far more formidable than the zako. If she's lucky, the hero might be chivalrous and let her live, though with a stern warning:
Sunset Riders Zako Chivalrous Hero2.gif

However, her most likely fate is to be gunned down alongside the male zako; just one more among so many, quickly defeated and forgotten.
Sunset Riders Zako Standard Fate.gif

The hero can throw her own dynamite back at her. The explosion might send her flying into the pile of hay, with only her legs sticking out . . .
Sunset Riders Zako Blown Into Hay.gif

. . . or the explosion might blast her to the top of the hay pile, to land with her face touching the hero's foot:

Sunset Riders Zako Blown Onto Foot.gif

After she throws her dynamite, she is defenseless and tries to run. But the hero gets points for taking out enemies, and she is a zako, so: Sunset Riders Zako Shot In Back.gif

There are also environmental weapons the hero can use to dispose of the pesky enemies. Here our zako thinks she can evade the hero, but she runs right under a dangling boulder. The hero takes the opportunity while a good lady of the saloon looks on in approval. Sunset Riders Zako Flattened Trampled2.gif

Here again, the zako thinks she can get away, but she doesn't notice the fire hazards right above her head. Our hero DOES notice them:
Sunset Riders Zako Burned.gif

The fire is probably the most brutal option for dealing with her, and there's no reason not to employ it. The game rewards the player for taking out enemies and for interacting with the environment.
But who knows what path the hero will take when it comes to this zako?

Sunset Riders Zako Taunt Hero.gif

I uploaded a video that shows each of these options along with sound, and this zako makes a very feminine and vulnerable sound when defeated.

So that's it.
Which path would you choose for dealing with this zako?

Thanks again to Watt Khan for inspiring me.
And a quick aside to smthng regarding the zako in Blue Archive: while it doesn't look like a game that would interest me, I do love how the zako skirts flutter up when they collapse.

Dudeeee, this is an AMAZING tribute and compilation!

I'm glad that there is a resurgence of interest towards dynamite lady.
It makes me even happier that my fanart helped to spark this resurgence.

Side note edit: I think it's a shame that dynamite lady doesn't have her own unique burning to death animation.
As it is, she shares the same burning sprites as everyone else in the game. Missed opportunity for sure.

Having posted a tribute to the wonderful Dynamite Lady from Sunset Riders, I felt compelled to do a tribute to the equally wonderful zako from the successor to Sunset Riders. As before, click on the thumbnail gifs for the full versions.

Mystic Warriors features outstanding graphics and animation, a superb 90s soundtrack, and most importantly, a feminine and vulnerable zako whom the heroes can deal with in a variety of ways.

I'm not sure what her actual title is, but for now I'm calling her "Grenade Kunoichi".
She is a member of the nefarious "Skull Organization", which threatens the world with their ninja ski lodges and ninja airports and such.
She wears a skull helmet and skull-themed armor, but rather than make her look tough and scary, this armor just emphasizes how feminine and vulnerable she is.
She's also thick in all the right places. For some reason, her armor does not extend to her back, so we get a view of her bikini-clad rear whenever she throws her grenade.
Perhaps not the best armor decision, but hey, I'm not complaining!
Mystic Warriors Zako Throw.gif

Unlike Dynamite Lady, Grenade Kunoichi works in teams. The heroes face a team of three on the ski lodge stage, a team of three in the forest stage, and a team of two on the final stage. They make a fierce "Yah" sound when they throw their grenades . . . except instead of actually sounding fierce, it just further emphasizes their femininity and vulnerability.
Mystic Warriors Zako Team Throw.gif

Her regular defeat animation has her faceplanting into the ground with a very feminine "Oof!" and her wonderfully round rear protruding up.
Mystic Warriors Zako Defeat.gif

Like Dynamite Lady, Grenade Kunoichi is defenseless once she has thrown her grenade, and can do nothing else but run away. A chivalrous hero might allow her to do just that.
Mystic Warriors Zako Mercy.gif

A less chivalrous but still merciful hero might knock her out with a non-lethal attack. All but one of the heroes have such an attack, though even then the zako might be knocked off a platform, fall more than ten feet, and bounce against the wood floor below. Hopefully that skull helmet is more than just decorative!
Mystic Warriors Merciful Defeat.gif

The most likely fate for these zako is the hero plows through them so quickly he hardly notices they were ever there, using a mix of lethal and non-lethal attacks (whichever is more convenient). They may also be piled among the regular male zako.
Mystic Warriors Zako Team Defeated.gif Mystic Warriors Zako Likely Fate.gif

However, if the heroes toss the grenade back at the Grenade Kunoichi, you might see her special defeat animation:
Mystic Warriors Zako Team Explode.gif

That's right: the force of the explosion knocks all the armor and skulls off her, leaving her clad only in her underwear and boots.
Mystic Warriors Zako Explode Closeup.gif

The heroes are so formidable they can tank the grenade explosion, so chasing the zako down with her grenade in your hand is a viable tactic.
And I do love how the last trace of the zako we see is her skull helmet rolling around the ground near where she lay.
Mystic Warriors Zako Explode 1.gif

I've uploaded a YouTube video displaying this zako, including all the options available for dealing with her, and with sound you get to hear her very feminine "Yah!" and "Oof!"

It's also fun to watch playthroughs of Mystic Warriors. Most players just plow through these zako without a second thought, but some seem to take some effort to either spare the zako or to throw their grenades back at them.

So that's it. What do you think of this zako? Do you agree she is a worthy successor to Dynamite Lady from Sunset Riders? Would you show mercy or chivalry to these zako?

I really appreciate the fact that they made her as visually distinctive as possible from Dynamite Lady. She's thicker, her clothes are more revealing, and her body language suggests that she's far more serious in her role as a bad girl (no flying kisses sadly). Also, love love love her big 80s hairdo.

I think we have our next zako art candidate here . But that will have to wait, currently working on something else at the moment for a different thread.
