Can i do that in paint.net or do i have to use photoshop?
can do it in both, for playing with alpha channels i prefere paint.net.
paint.net automatically creates an alpha once you start erasing stuff to the background.
You actually dont even see the channel as in photoshop.
Just keep in mind that if you want to make stuff transparent, as like 50/50 visible/transparent, you need DXT5 textures.
For what i know you can not just change the texture to DXT5 if it is in DXT1 compression.
Difference between the 2 is not only the compression method, the alpha channel with a DXT1 is either 1 or 0. Visible bit or invisible completely.
Alpha channels of a DXT5 can be different shades of visibility
