Unwieldy indeed, it could work with static imports, but if we were speaking of static imports there wouldn't be a need to adress this issue at all. Anyway. Some one did a recolouring of preset template by extracting them from he game. They might be able to help you further. There are threads with preset palette swaps in the Hair Imports board.
