Mermaids are usually good in RPGs. Why did they attack him? Or this is one of those dumb "the world is just an MMO" anime where they ruin the fantasy by making it into a video game and NPCs are just 1 dimensional?
Also, why does the main character have a bird head? And the other guy is a fish? I guess they got cursed or those are playeable races?

It's a VR MMO. So yeah, they're just mindless enemies. Non-hostile NPCs are very human-like.

The protagonist likes to conceal his face and is kind of a troll when it comes to fantasy immersion. Also he can't wear body armor because of a curse he got. The fish guy is an NPC he recently met.
